One of the famous books to come from the Transvaal Lowveld of that genre, were A C White's "Call of the Bushveld", an evocative hunting book by the owner of 'White's Avoca', a game farm near present-day Hoedspruit. The latter two volumes are beautifully illustrated by my old friend Charles Astley-Maberly's : Arne Schaefer. Ashley Hunter has 61 books on Goodreads with ratings. Ashley Hunter’s most popular book is Auctioned To The Dragon (Wild Shifters, #1).
An account of Transvaal history from until a turbulent period in the history of South Africa, which covers the discovery of gold, personalities such as Paul Kruger and Jan smuts. The story recounts the clash of Boer and Brit, avarice and corruption, leading up to the Anglo-Boer War. Illustrations by C T Astley Maberly. The book is nicely illustrated with many sketches by Astley-Maberly. Also a lot of information about the legendary ivory hunter Jim Sutherland (who was one of Ruhsby's best friends). If you are further interested in George Rushby, there's some information about the man in Tony Sanchez-Arino's book "Elephant Hunters, Men of Legend".

The hunter of the title is George Rushby, who came to South Africa from England in search of a new life and ended up in Tanganyika as a game ranger, where he confronted the man-eating lions of the Njombe district.
One of the joys of T V Bulpin's book is that it is illustrated with line drawings by C T Astley Maberley, several of them designed to fit around the text. Another thing I like about the story is the development of Bvekenya's relationship with the local people, a tribe called the Shangane, who more than once saved his life.
